Dundee UMC News for the Week of 1/22/23

Week of January 23, 2023

Psalm 27:1, 4-9

1 Corinthians 1:10-18

Yesterday’s service can be seen here.

I’m not much of a TV person, often preferring to read a book in my spare time (yes, I still do have some of that).  Even so, I enjoy a good sci-fi movie and Star Trek II:  The Wrath of Kahn is a favorite in our house.

During the message yesterday, Pastor Brad quoted two of the main characters in that movie.  James T. Kirk and Mr. Spock had a discussion toward the beginning of the movie involving the phrase The needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few, or the one.  They repeat these words again at the end when (spoiler alert) Mr. Spock saves the ship and all those aboard at the cost of his own life.  I watched this clip innumerable  times before I could just get choked up watching it and not actually cry when Spock said these as some of his last words.

Paul, in his letter to the Corinthians (way back before such things as sci-fi movies), was trying to get this very message across to them.  Paul was all about the big picture…doing things for others and being part of something bigger, as in the Kingdom of God.

This church does a lot for others.  The Caring and Sharing program alone does fabulous work in feeding and providing support to the needy of this and surrounding communities.  This church also does the work of God in supporting each other.  It can be the little things…the Leadership Team singing happy birthday to the recording secretary, the person that sees a need for containers for funeral dinners and so makes it a point to provide them whenever they can, the anonymous donor that provides altar flowers when no one has signed up for a Sunday….  These are small things, but the lift they give to the receiver and those around is priceless. They all add to the bigger picture, giving us a glimpse into the love that is God.  God can be seen and heard in all these things.

Reach out and spread the word of God both in the big picture and in the little things.  God is everywhere.  All glory and honor to Him.

Have a blessed week!
